Miley and Kaitlynn were reportedly living together in a gated community home, and shared a years-long friendship before things took a romantic turn.

Is it over for Miley Cyrus, 26, and Kaitlynn Carter, 31? “Miley and Kaitlyn broke up,” a source revealed to People magazine on Saturday, September 21. “They’re still friends.” The surprising news comes after they were spotted showing some PDA on a date at Los Angeles’ Kreation Juicery on Saturday, September 14 — only a week ago — and just returned from a whirlwind trip to New York Fashion Week. “They’ve been friends forever and were there for each other when they were both getting separated. But they’re just not in a romantic relationship anymore,” the insider added.

Miley and Kaitlynn were first linked after they were spotted kissing on a getaway in Italy in August. The trip occurred just before Miley confirmed her split from longtime love Liam Hemsworth, 29, on August 10 and Kaitlynn ended her non-legal marriage of a year to Brody Jenner, 36. The women had been friends for years, however, things took a romantic turn once they were both single — which wasn’t a surprise to Kaitlynn’s Hills co-stars Jason and Ashley Wahler. “I have had a lot of conversations with Kaitlynn during the season, and her, Miley, Liam and Brody would always hang out together,” Ashley revealed in an interview with Access Hollywood. “So, I know they have all been friends for a long time.”

Miley and Kaitlynn have been practically inseparable since their Italy getaway, reportedly moving into Miley’s LA-area home in the ritzy Hidden Hills community in early September. “You never spot one without the other at the home. The couple was seen moving into a home last week in the same gated community as the Kardashians, The Weekend and Drake who they now live very close to,” an eyewitness spilled to us EXCLUSIVELY at the time. The ladies’ continued their romantic adventures in New York City, stepping out for a date at hotspot La Esquina on September 10 and attending several events and shows. Miley also helped celebrate Kaitlynn’s 31st birthday with an intimate dinner party at West Hollywood’s gorgeous Sunset Tower Hotel on September 4.

Though they’ve been packing on the PDA and flirty Instagram comments for the past few weeks, neither Miley or Kaitlynn has confirmed the status of their romance. We have tried reached to both Miley and Kaitlynn’s reps for comment about the break-up, but we have not heard back as of publishing time.

While Miley & Liam’s split seemed amicable, a new report claims that their sudden breakup was actually on account of infidelity by the singer & drug use on his part.

Following the shocking news of Miley Cyrus’ and Liam Hemsworth’s August 10 split, the breakup is turning sour and the two can’t see eye-to-eye, TMZ reports. Sources with direct knowledge of the breakup are sharing conflicting stories, the publication says. For starters, sources close to Miley are saying she actually tried to save the marriage and that the “deal breaker” was excessive drinking and “certain drugs” on Liam’s part, TMZ’s report claims. “She wanted no part of it,” the source said when speaking to TMZ

However, it appears that sources close to Liam are telling a different side of the story. The insiders claimed that the drug and alcohol story was “designed to mask what they say really destroyed their marriage,” TMZ reports, which was “infidelity” on Miley’s part, according to their source. Additionally, the Liam sources implied that the couple weren’t necessarily broken up before Miley’s PDA pics with Kaitlynn Carter broke and any claims that they’d been broken up for some time are an “attempt by Miley to distract from her infidelity.” We've reached out to representatives of both stars for comment.

It was just eight months after Miley and Liam wed in a romantic ceremony at their Tennessee home that they called it quits. The couple had dated on and off for ten years. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Miley told PEOPLE in a statement on Aug. 10. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

While neither Miley or Liam have made mention of drugs or infidelity following their split, Miley does appear to be moving on pretty quickly. The “Mother’s Daughter” singer was seen getting hot and heavy with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn on Aug 9. The two were photographed locking lips during a steamy PDA session and we were EXCLUSIVELY told how Liam felt about the viral snapshots. “He and Miley aren’t together and she has every right to kiss anyone she likes. This breakup has thrown and gutted him. It will take some time to get back to his normal.”

"Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward," the actor said on Monday alongside a photo of a beach during sunset.

"This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making any comments to any journalists or media outlets," Hemsworth, 29, continued.

Cyrus, 26, announced the separation on Saturday through her representative.

"Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy," the representative said in a statement.

Hemsworth and Cyrus tied the knot in December at their home in Franklin, Tenn.

Cyrus was recently spotted kissing reality television personality Kaitlynn Carter, 30, in Italy in photographs published by Entertainment Tonight.
